Endlich Urlaub! Wir hatten Mitte August zwei Wochen Familienurlaub; die erste Woche sind wir zu Andy's Eltern in den Schwarzwald gefahren.
Der Wald war voll mit wilden Heidelbeeren, und so sind Emily, Andy's Mutter und eine Freundin losgezogen und haben den ganzen Nachmittag Heidelbeeren geerntet.
In the middle of August Andy took two weeks off, and we finally enjoyed "vacation" together. With a newborn and toddler, a week at Andy's parents was perfect. With more adults to go around, it was more relaxing for all, and we did some fun things together.
Emily experienced something entirely new that week: picking wild blueberries deep in the Black Forest, thanks to her mom-in-law who "has connections". Her friend had all the gear for a really authentic, if back-breaking experience. And wild blueberries proved delicious in jam and for baking!
Sie kamen mit reicher Beute nach Hause, eimerweise Beeren, die wir (und vor allem Andy's Vater :-) sauber gemacht haben, und dann...
Anybody nearby got put to work cleaning the berries (or just eating them). . .
... gegessen haben. Joshua fand's super und freute sich dann spaeter...
...ueber seine blaue Zunge, die er im Spiegel bewundert hat.
Joshua was particularly impressed with his blue tongue, which he admired in the mirror!
Es gabe jede Menge zu tun. Zum Beispiel Traktor fahren...
There was plenty to do at Oma and Opa's house, like driving a tractor . . .

... Oma's Riesenkuerbis bewundern ...

... oder einfach nur Fussball spielen (Bayern Muenchen, wir kommen!)
and playing soccer in Oma and Opa's big, flat yard. (Watch out, Bayern Muenchen, here comes fresh talent!)

Joshua liebt Rutschen; oder "Jutschen", wie er sagt. Weiss jemand was er meint, wenn er sagt: "Die Jutsche junter jutschen"? :-D
Joshua loves sliding and climbing. He can already make it to the top of the jungle gym!

It was great to see Joshua and Henry strengthening their relationship with their grandparents.

Wir hatten lieben Besuch von Freunden: Matthias und Evi mit Lea & Robin. Wir hatten viel Spass zusammen.
We also really enjoyed cooking out with good friends, Matthias and Evi, and their two precious children. Fun was had by all!
Die Kinder fanden den Kidnertische klasse; der war schon vor 30 Jahren der Hit, als Andy noch klein war.
The kids had a great time sitting at their kids' table, still around from Andy's day!

Kleiner Exkurs: Emily und Andy haben einen Tag lang eine Etappe vom Westweg (der geht von Pforzheim nach Basel (CH) quer durch den Scharzwald) gemacht.
Auftakt war ein kleines Fruehstueck in einem Cafe mit Cappuccino...
Emily and Andy's adventure of the week: We spent a day hiking one of the 16 stages of the West Trail, a route that begins in Pforzheim and ends in Basel, therefore traversing the Black Forest from north to south. We parked our car at our end destination and used regional buses to get to the start. Here we are enjoying a breakfast during a bus "layover".
und dann los, 26km durch den Scharzwald.
Then we were off! 26 kilometers, or a good 16 miles, through the Black Forest.
Sehr schoene Aussicht ueber den Rheingraben auf die Vogesen in Frankreich.
The trip started with an 800m ascent, with some pretty impressive results: we could see as far as the Vosges on the other side of the Rhine.
und unterwegs jede Menge leckere wilde Blaubeeren, Walderdbeeren und Himbeeren!!!
On the way we encountered loads of "fruits of the forest"as a dear sister likes to say. We nibbled on wild raspberries, blueberries, and strawberries 'til we realized we'd better pick up the pace!

Da hat sich aber einer beim Holzstapeln viel Muehe gemacht und Romantik mit Arbeit kombiniert.
Somebody decided to combine hard work with a little romance . . . and I don't mean just us!
Es war ein netter Weg, nicht zu steil und landschaftlich abwechslungsreich.
We enjoyed the trip, which brought us through varied terrain, and was less steep than a tour in the Alps. But we made up for it with the distance traveled!

Zum Abschluss unserer Woche ging's noch in den Tierpark nach Pforzheim, ein kleiner aber netter Zoo mit interessanten Tieren.
We closed our week together with a family trip to a small zoo in Pforzheim, which features primarily animals indiginous to the Black Forest.
Interessant waren Tiere wie die Lamas, die wir auch fuettern durften.
Well, lamas are not native to the area, but are still fun to pet and feed. Ooh, that tickles!
Und apropos Fuetterung: Sehr spannend waren die Fuetteungen der Fischotter (suess, leider haben wir kein Bild gemacht) und der Luchse. Hier hat der Tierpfleger an Schnueren kleine Huehnchen entlanggezogen, sodass die Luchse sich das Fressen erarbeiten mussten.
We witnessed the official feedings of river otters, raccoons, and lynxs, all indiginous to the region. Wow! Watching those lynxes jump and pounce for their food was really amazing. The zookeepers sent baby chicks (Jamie Oliver would be pleased) and then steaks out on wires which they reeled in and out by way of a pulley, teasing them a bit and encouraging them to "hunt" and fight for their meal.
Joshua war begeistert, wie hoch die springen koennen und wie laut die schreien.
Joshua was fascinated by their incredible jumping, and still imitates the lynxs' loud cry!
